Introduction to Enhanced Illness Management and Recovery

Developed by the University of Minnesota’s Center for Practice Transformation, in consultation with experts, Enhanced Illness Management and Recovery (E-IMR), is an augmented or “enhanced” version of IMR with the Integrated Dual Disorder Treatment (IDDT) principles integrated into the intervention to better serve individuals diagnosed with serious mental illness and a co-occurring substance use disorder (COD). Practitioners across a range of service lines gain a shared language, foundation of person-centered, recovery-oriented principles and proven strategies to use when delivering care to individuals with COD. This approach helps practitioners and the individuals they serve identify the interaction between substance use and mental illness as well as utilize strategies to reduce and manage symptoms and support them in living their best lives.

Designed to provide a basic understanding of E-IMR, this self-paced course is a great way for practitioners, program administrators and clinical directors to get a sense of whether E-IMR is a fit for you or your organization. It is also the first step to receiving CPT’s E-IMR Foundations Certification

Introduction to E-IMR contains five sections and takes about three hours total to complete. However, you can do it at your own pace, start/stop your training experience and come back to it at any time. Resources are available to download along the way.

If you are interested in learning to use E-IMR in your practice, the Introduction is the best way to get started!

Testimonials for E-IMR

E-IMR has changed how I practice. It has opened my eyes to starting with the basics, which I might sometimes miss if I wasn’t so familiar with the modules. Using the goal sheet has been inspirational to clients because something about writing it down and tracking it really motivates folks. Then I love being able to reflect and celebrate with clients as they experience progress and check things off their goal sheet.

– Rhonda Callahan, Northwestern Mental Health

E-IMR has been very useful in our groups and one-to-one work at our facility. E-IMR is grounded in the idea that people can and do recover in a strength-based and hope-rich environment. E-IMR is also evidenced-based and grounded in research. The 11 modules are a perfect match (and length) for our 90 day skill-focused IRTS program in MN!

– Darrin, E-IMR provider
