Research on the Relationship Between PTSD and Substance Abuse

Research tells us that those who experience trauma and develop posttraumatic stress disorder are at high risk for substance abuse and dependence. This is also true among other diagnoses. For example, individuals with schizophrenia use nicotine at extremely high rates (Lasser et al., 2000). The National Comorbidity Study that sampled a large population of people throughout the United States found relationships between particular diagnostic categories and abuse of specific drugs (Kessler et al., 2005). What does this information tell us? Can we use it to assist us when completing an integrated assessment? How might it help with treatment planning? John Sutherland, PhD a clinician and researcher on PTSD, will discuss the diagnosis, psychopathology, prevalence, and the development of evidence based treatments.
